Sitemap Best Practices
- Have one: Every website should have an XML sitemap at /sitemap.xml.
- Submit it: Add your sitemap URL to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Reference it: Point to your sitemap from your robots.txt file.
- Keep it current: Include accurate lastmod dates so search engines know what's changed.
- Under 50,000 URLs: Google's limit per sitemap file. Use a sitemap index for larger sites.
- Only canonical URLs: Don't include redirects, 404s, or non-canonical pages.
