What Is a Local SEO Grid Audit?

A local SEO grid audit (also called a geo-grid rank check or local rank tracker) measures where your business appears in Google Maps search results at multiple locations around your area. Instead of checking your ranking from a single point, we test from 25 different geographic coordinates arranged in a 5×5 grid around your business.

This matters because Google Maps rankings are hyper-local — your business might rank #1 for someone searching a block away, but not appear at all for someone two miles out. A single-point rank check misses the full picture. A grid audit shows you exactly where your visibility drops off and where competitors are winning.

How to Read Your Results

After the scan completes, you'll see an interactive color-coded map. Each dot represents one of the 25 grid points:

  • Green (Rank 1-3) — Strong visibility. Customers searching here are very likely to find you.
  • Yellow (Rank 4-7) — Moderate visibility. You appear but may be buried below competitors.
  • Red (Rank 8-20) — Weak visibility. Customers likely won't scroll far enough to see you.
  • Gray (Not Found) — You don't appear in the top 20 results at this location.

Your Visibility Score shows the percentage of grid points where you rank in the top 3. A score above 60% means strong local dominance. Below 30% means significant gaps that competitors are exploiting.

Why Grid Audits Matter for Local Businesses

Google's local algorithm weighs proximity heavily. A plumber ranking #1 near their shop might not rank at all five miles away. Grid audits reveal these blind spots so you can take targeted action: optimize your Google Business Profile, build local citations, earn reviews from customers in weak areas, or create location-specific content.

Most local SEO tools charge $50-200/month for grid tracking. ScoreCraft includes grid scans in our Starter and Pro plans, powered by real Google Maps data via the DataForSEO API — the same data source used by enterprise SEO platforms.
