Can ChatGPT See Your Website? Here's How to Check

Here's something most business owners haven't thought about yet: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude are sending real traffic to websites. Not a ton — not yet — but the numbers are growing fast, and the sites that show up in AI answers are getting clicks that their competitors aren't.

The question is: can these AI tools even access your website?

Because if you've blocked their crawlers (and plenty of sites have, sometimes without realizing it), you're invisible to a channel that's only going to get bigger.

Wait, AI Tools Crawl Websites?

Yes. ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic), and Perplexity all operate web crawlers that visit websites to build the knowledge base they use when answering questions. They work similarly to Googlebot — they follow links, read content, and index what they find.

Each one has its own user agent:

  • OpenAI: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User
  • Google Gemini: Google-Extended
  • Anthropic (Claude): ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot
  • Meta AI: FacebookBot (also used for Meta AI features)

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's a good plumber in Austin?" and your site is accessible, there's a chance your business shows up in the answer. If you've blocked GPTBot, that chance drops to zero.

How to Check Your robots.txt

The robots.txt file is where you tell crawlers what they can and can't access. It sits at the root of your website: yourdomain.com/robots.txt.

Open it in your browser and look for any of the AI user agents listed above. You can also use our free robots.txt analyzer to check instantly. If you see something like this:

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /

That means you've blocked those crawlers from your entire site.

If your robots.txt doesn't mention these user agents at all, you're probably fine — most crawlers are allowed by default unless specifically blocked.

Why Would a Site Block AI Crawlers?

A few reasons:

  • Their CMS or hosting provider did it automatically. Some WordPress security plugins and hosting platforms added AI crawler blocks as a "feature" in 2024-2025. The site owner may not even know.
  • Content protection concerns. Publishers and content creators worried about AI training on their content without permission chose to block access. That's a legitimate concern for media companies, but it's usually the wrong call for a business that wants to be found.
  • They copied a robots.txt from somewhere without understanding it. This is more common than you'd expect.

Should You Allow or Block AI Crawlers?

For most businesses, you should allow them. Here's my thinking:

If your goal is to be found by potential customers, you want to be visible everywhere those customers are looking. And increasingly, they're asking AI tools instead of (or in addition to) Googling. Blocking AI crawlers is like unlisting your phone number and hoping people find you.

There are valid reasons to block:

  • You publish premium content behind a paywall and don't want it freely summarized.
  • You have proprietary research you want to protect.
  • You're a large publisher negotiating licensing deals with AI companies.

But if you're a plumber, a SaaS startup, an ecommerce store, a consultant, or basically any business that wants more customers? Let them in.

How to Fix It

If you find that AI crawlers are blocked, here's what to do:

  1. Open your robots.txt file (usually in the root of your website files).
  2. Remove or comment out any Disallow rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, and PerplexityBot.
  3. If you want to be explicit about allowing them, add: User-agent: GPTBot followed by Allow: /
  4. Save the file and verify by visiting yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser.

Changes take effect immediately for new crawler visits. It may take days or weeks for the AI tools to re-crawl and update their knowledge of your site.

Beyond robots.txt: Making Your Site AI-Friendly

Allowing access is step one. If you want AI tools to actually reference your site in their answers, a few things help:

  • Write clear, direct answers to common questions. AI tools love content that straightforwardly answers a specific question. FAQ pages are gold.
  • Use structured data (schema markup). This helps AI systems understand what your business does, where you're located, what you offer, and how to categorize you.
  • Keep content fresh. AI tools prioritize recent information. A blog post from 2019 is less likely to be cited than one from this year.
  • Build authority the old-fashioned way. Backlinks, citations, and mentions from reputable sources signal to AI tools that your site is trustworthy.
